Rape-axe is a new female condom developed by a South African woman, Doctor Sonnet Ehlers after she witnessed the horrific aftermath of a rape victim. She is hoping the new female device with jagged barbs will combat rape in the most painful way.
It is unbelievable that in this day and age, women and children still live in fear for their safety. When will the law be on their side? Why are rape victims made to feel they are in the wrong or at fault? Many societies tend to treat rape victims as the criminal. The time, it seems, has come to fight back.
The Rape-axe prototype was first launched on 31st August 2005 at Kleinmond, Cape Province, South Africa. The device consists of a latex sheath containing razor sharp barbs on the inside. It is worn inside the vagina very much like a tampon. In the process of a sexual assault, as the penis enters the vagina the barbs attach themselves to the penis causing considerable pain and discomfort and can only be removed surgically. The offender cannot pee or walk while the condom is still attached and trying to remove it his self will only result in the grip becoming tighter. As there is no other way to remove the sheath, there is no escape from arrest as medical staff will automatically alert the authorities.
During the 2010 World Cup, 30,000 of these condoms were distributed in South Africa which, according to the Human Rights Watch, has the highest rate of rapes in the world and it is believed that 16 percent of the population suffers from HIV.
Doctor Ehlers pointed out how some women in South Africa, in a bid to prevent rape, insert razor blades into their vagina. She believes it is time something is done to help these women who have little or no rights and that it will make some men have a rethink before attempting to sexually assault a woman.
What do you think about this invention? Does it make the vulnerable woman feel more safe or it exposes her to more assaults? kindly leave us your comments below.
